AVISTON
LUMBER CO.
ESTABLISHED 1947
New Baden-1965
Highland-1978 Mascoutah-1984 Carlyle-1996
Aviston Lumber was co-founded in 1947 by
J.B.“Jack” Heimann, a farmer living north of
Aviston, and his nephew, Paul W. Netemeyer, a
carpenter from St. Rose. Together they started
Aviston Lumber and Material Company on five lots
that had been used as a lumber yard by George
Dillman. At that time the yard was approximately
100 years old.
The first buildings were a 3,000 sq. ft. lumber
shed with a 240 sq. ft. cement room built into
the lumber shed and a 1,152 sq. ft. office and
warehouse for millwork, hardware and paint.
Within a few years, the company began hiring
carpenters to repair, remodel and erect new
buildings for customers in the nearby trading
area. They built their first solar-styled
poultry house for a client in 1954, followed by
other specialized buildings for hog producers
expanding the business beyond the Illinois
borders.
As industry innovators, Aviston Lumber’s
management team recognized that prefabricating
farm buildings and pre-engineering roof trusses
for homes and commercial building would
significantly lower building costs. This soon
would become the required building standard
adopted by the industry.
Aviston Manufacturing Co. was officially opened
in 1956. Manufacturing began with agricultural
buildings, residential homes and light
commercial buildings. Using plans from the
University of Illinois, rigid frame buildings
for cattle and machinery were also offered.
A highly experienced team of managers combined
with a motivated staff of versatile employees
are credited with the steady success behind
Aviston Lumber Co. The result is a company-wide
attitude that delivers what their retail
customers and professional contractors need.
Sales naturally followed; and the trend appears
to be growing.
Aviston Lumber currently operates five stores,
with home center and lumber yards in Aviston,
New Baden, Mascoutah, Highland and Carlyle.
Managers and other key employees boast 10 to 40
years of industry experience. This, accompanied
by unparalleled customer service, produces the
professional strength and solid business growth
we’re experiencing today.
Currently, Aviston Lumber Co provides design,
building materials, cabinets, doors, hardware,
insulation, lumber millwork, paint and plumbing
materials. The company’s bold “roof truss” logo
can be spotted on over 20 trucks today. This
mobile fleet is just a small part of the many
pieces of equipment needed to drive our busy
day-to-day operations. Some 45 local employees
do the rest, with their retail product and
services reaching well beyond the St. Louis
metro area.
The co-founder’s son, Maurice, has continued in
the firm, keeping alive the fine tradition
established by his father over 40 years ago.
Maurice E. Netemeyer was promoted from general
manager to president of the firm in 1988.
Maurice is a past director and president of the
Illinois Lumber and Building Dealers
Association. This strength in leadership is sure
to keep Aviston Lumber Co. on track and
prosperous for years to come.
